As chief of the division of transplantation at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford, I have a strong commitment to the cause of organ donation. I'm also passionate about sports, especially cycling, which has been with me pretty much all my life.
My patient, 12-year-old Connor Ellison (www.connorsjourney.com), was born with liver disease that led to life-threatening complications over the last few months. These complications resulted in an urgent need for a major operation, which I performed in December 2009 at Packard Children’s.
Connor was anxious about the surgery, and rightly so, but he was also upset that the surgery was going to interfere with his plan to race across the US in June 2010 to raise money for Team Donate Life. To provide him with moral support, I promised Connor that I would join him and his team in the race and help him with his fund-raising efforts. Now, only a few months after such a big operation, he is already training for the race, so I cannot back out! He is such an inspirational young man.
Team Donate Life’s mission is to promote organ donation and transplantation. The Race Across America (RAAM) is an annual event covering more than 3000 miles. This year the June race begins in Oceanside, CA, just north of San Diego and ends in Annapolis, Maryland. RAAM has always served as a high-profile vehicle for racers raising money for charitable causes. RAAM participants have raised over $ 1 million for charity in each of the past three years. The Lon Haldeman Award was created to honor racers who raise the most funds for their chosen charity, thus, I hope this year Connor will be the recipient of this award!
It is important to clarify that funds raised by Connor’s team will go to charity; not a cent will go to Connor or his family. I hope you support Connor’s altruistic efforts. I am honored to be a member of his team. Feel free to share Connor's fundraising efforts with your family and friends – his whole team would appreciate it.

Thank you.
